Henry, a “pet” chimpanzee, was imprisoned in a filthy cage in the dark garage for 15 years, being given sodas and coffee to drink and cigarettes to smoke. He was weak, emaciated, and missing many of his teeth when he was confiscated by the Houston SPCA. They nursed him back to health and on Monday, February 23rd he arrived home at the Chimp Haven chimpanzee sanctuary.
We were concerned about Henry’s initial adjustment to his new life in Chimp Haven, but within hours, he made himself quite comfortable and even ventured outdoors for some fresh air—something he had not done in 15 years! Imagine how many more chimpanzees Chimp Haven can give the same opportunity! Please follow Chimp Haven’s example and do something positive to address a serious issue.
Privately owned chimpanzees, whether pets or entertainers, need to be placed in a secure, compassionate environment where humans remain safe and chimpanzees receive appropriate care.
Here is what you can do—
- Support Henry and other pet chimpanzees through Chimp Haven’s Chimpanzee Rescue Fund. Chimp Haven is taking action now to provide a home for privately owned chimpanzees. You will help prevent future human tragedies and give unwanted chimpanzees the compassionate home they deserve.
- Contact your local, state and federal elected officials and tell them you want new, stronger laws that prohibit individuals from owning chimpanzees and other primates.
